Another Newby This time from the WI Side!!

Welcome Little Nemo:) Hey, I'm in the UP and my son lives in Green Bay. I plan to trailer down to take he and the grandson fishing at Algoma or Keewanee. It's a little early right now (blizzard today here in Marquette) but when does the good salmon and steelhead fishing start there? Thanks, Yooperdad -
Da UP is now represented:)

I'm envious. The UP certainly has it's advantages, but an early fishing season isn't one of them:( We have a storm warning for Monday night, with 10-15 inches of new snow expected, maybe more:eek: Yooperdad

Paulywood and Satisfaxion, am I glad to see your posts. I was bitching about the Lowrance I had on the boat, and the family surprised me with a Garmin 340C for Christmas this year. I had identified that as the unit I would get when I got a new one and they surprised me with it. Have a separate Garmin 182C gps and I love it. Hope I am as satisfied with the fishfinder. Yooperdad

I hear ya about the helmsman, who is me more often than not, after setting the lines. But on my boat, as I mentioned above, I can't control speed from the helm. That's a manual adjustment on my little Yamaha. That's why I was asking about the rear mount. I had planned to mount it up front, until I started thinking about how we function on the boat, then had second thoughts.

Here is an old photo of my boat. I say old as I have a new board now and 4 Walkers. I like the Walker compact design and have them tight together on each corner, leaving more room up the chute. There is plenty of gunnel behind the board where I could mount the Subtroll, or could make a bracket off the board somewhere near the riggers. The inside rigger on the starboard side will be the Subtroll rigger, running straight back when in use. We can steer the kicker from the helm, but still have to adjust speed at the motor. The sides on my Whaler are pretty low, so the board and risers were to get the riggers up and in easier operating space. Plus the board provides good security in the back, and a good leaning post when netting or whatever. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to explain why I am asking the question. I'd like to install it the best way the first time. Thanks, Yooperdad

This will be my first year with a Subtroll, which I haven't mounted yet. Boat is still snow covered, but soon.......? There seem to be a lot of discussions about which unit to buy, cable wear, and use, but I haven't heard anyone mention where they have the display head mounted, on the dash with the other instruments, or at the back of the boat where it can be seen and read by the person operating the downrigger? I'm leaning toward trying to find a spot at the back with the downriggers. What are your experiences and thoughts? And a photo if you have yours mounted near your downriggers would be great. Thanks, Yooperdad

Hey, know what you mean! It was exciting yesterday to see open water here in Marquette:) Even white caps! We have started to lose deer in the yards now and we need the winter to break ASAP or a bunch are going to go in the next few weeks. Since no one mentioned applying heat to bend the heads, I then assume it's not required. Just do it slowly and carefully when on the water to observe the roll. Thanks again.

We have cheese go moldy all the time. Thanks for the tip. Going to try it today:) Mike

It's a small world. I was in Bamberg, Germany, 65-68, then on to Viet Nam from there after some special training. Lot of memories, some much better than others. Just checked your website. Neat. Loved your fishing poem. My "Hippner Pond" was Fisherman's Paradise on Spring Creek near Bellefonte, PA, where my Dad started taking me fly fishing when I was about 9. Those were the days:)

Deal muskybob. Hey I see US Army 66-67. Nam?
-
Thanks. How about the glo heads vs being tied on tubes?
-
Tied these up. I like the appearance of the flies with the glo heads, but they sure are a pain to tie up compared to the flies tied on tubes. The tubes go very quickly, and are easy to handle compared to trying to hold that head and wrap tinsel around it. Does it make a difference??? Yooperdad

That's what I was looking for. Thanks for the info. I suspect you have to apply a little heat to bend the plastic, or does it bend with force?

Guys, I have most everything else but have not yet gone into copper or wire line salmon fishing. However, living on Lake Superior, I do have wire line rods that were used for fishing lakers. They have 45# braided stainless wire on roller tip rods and with weight, typically run with 300 to 600 feet of line out to trace the bottom. So the question is, could these be used for salmon? They are not set up on line counter reels since the objective was to keep letting out line until you bottom bounced. Yooperdad

Since this post started with a question about running meat, I have a question. I have seen posts about making sure that your meat head is properly "tuned". Can someone explain what that means and how it's done, if there is a technique? Thanks, Yooperdad

I bought glo heads. I like the glo, and they look good too.

My biologist friend did verify tonight that what I posted was correct. However, he suggested keeping the receit for the purchase to be safe.

I just read the order and I think it's legal since I buy the herring from a fish house in Marquette. The herring come from a VHS Free Zone, Lake Superior, so they can be used in any water. I believe the same applies if you get the herring from Lake Michigan and use it in Lake Michigan, then it's OK. What a confusing order!!! I have a fish biologist friend who works for MDNR and I'll check with him and report his answer. Thanks for the heads-up. We all need to help prevent the spread. Yooperdad

Thank you. I really like the old girl. The only downside, now that I am getting old and fat:D, is the difficulty getting up front. There is a hatch on the foredeck but not real big. An arch to hang on to would be nice. Yooperdad

Just saw MuskyBob's recipe and I know what is for dinner next Friday:) This one I made Thursday and it is great. Easy, fast, and folks who normally don't like fish try it and will love it too. Yooperdad Cheesy Salmon Chowder Makes 8 servings Prep Time: 15 Minutes Cook Time: 30 Minutes Ready in: 45 Minutes Ingredients 3 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 cups diced potatoes 2 cups chicken broth 1 cups diced carrots 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon dried dill weed 2 (16 ounce) cans salmon, drained (Original recipe called for canned salmon. Any fish can be used.) 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk 1 (15 ounce) can creamed corn 1/2 pound Cheddar cheese, shredded Directions 1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Cook onion, celery and garlic powder in butter until onions are translucent. Stir in potatoes, broth, carrots, salt, pepper and dill. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes, or until potatoes and carrots are done. 2. Cube 2-3# salmon filets. Simmer in broth drawn from step #1. When fish is cooked, add everything to the big pot. 3. Stir in evaporated milk, corn and shredded Cheddar until cheese is melted and soup is heated through. Enjoy!

I have many interests, but the President's major job in my view is to keep us safe. Bush has done that, although he has done very poorly on a lot of other issues. The Democrats scare me, especially when the House and Senate are controlled by Democrats as well. Look at what they just did last week, going on vacation instead of addressing the electronic surveillance matter that was strongly passed by the Senate:angry2: Guns are another interest. Obama says he supports the 2nd Amendment and that it applies to all of us. In the next breath he said he supports the DC gun ban. Go figure? Clinton has long been after our guns. And she is basically a Socialist. McCain only gets a C+ from NRA so he isn't much of a choice either. Interesting that so many say the economy is bad. National unemployment is 5.2% I just heard, which is a little higher than the historic low hit a few months ago, but still good. Michigan, of course, has not enjoyed the roaring business expansion the rest of the country has. Enough already, reading and talking about fishing is a lot more fun:D Guess I'll have to vote McCain, as the best of what we have left. Yuk! Yooperdad

Made my own last year with some herring from the local fish-house. It's work, but the result was great. Fileted the herring, thinned it to the proper thickness for the baitheads, cut the bait pieces to shape, packed in kosher salt for a few days to cure and suck the water out, cut and scraped the salt off, put in ziplock in the fridge with Mike's Herring Oil for a few days, then froze in small qualtity (5-6 pieces) bags for outings. Like I said, a lot of work but the results are quite good. Something to keep you busy when you aren't on your boat:) Yooperdad

I custom made this holder from plexiglass to fit a falt spot on my dash. Had to put the top on it to keep the spoons from coming out of the slots when running under rougher conditions. Yooperdad
